Goodwill from all parties resulted last evening in unlocking the door to open once again a Lyme Regis Club for young people

Lyme Regis Town Council held an Extraordinary general meeting for all concerned parties to discuss and thrash out any difficulties that might have arisen in planning the opening of the club. After a good and lengthy discussion a proposition was put to the council to go ahead and a vote taken. It was a unanimous vote. Clapping and cheers greeted the announcement that once again the youth club will be open.

Magna Housing Association

I was invited to the Annual Meeting of the Magna HousingAssociation in Dorchester. They gave in donations over £1,000.00 last year to various organisations. Over £1000 was given to Royal British Legion Lyme Regis to re model and look after the Polish war memorial dedicated to the polish airman who were stationed in the West Country in the second world war. A service is held in November each year at the memorial Some of the pictures take you inside the meeting place at Dorchester.

I am being a bit self centred here this was a wonderful day for me to see the Club being opened in a way that most of us dreamed of. Over the years many people one of whom I must mention Melanie Owen without her help and others the club would have certainly closed. To have given there time and sometimes money to keep the Club open for the youngsters of this town is commendable. This time with hard work and a lot of sincerity for the project I am sure it will succeed. If today was anything to go by with the turn out of the Lyme people it cannot fail.You will see in the pictures Lyme Regis Mayor Mrs Ellis, James Ward Rice (Dorset Youth Service) Marcus Dixon (Lyme Regis Development Trust) and supporters and helpers in the running of the club.

It is with great sadness that my friend Ted Street passed away in Australia on December 23rd 2010. I am very grateful with my wife Josephine to have visited him in Adelaide last February. We were made very welcome by all the family and spent a wonderful evening with them. Certainly at that time Ted had lost none of his own particular personality. His memory of Lyme was a good as ever and still as passionate about the town of his birth. It has been a priviledge to have known him

On October 29th I attended Cerne Abbas with other Chairman, Standard Bearers and members of the Royal British Legion Dorset to start the 2010 Poppy Appeal. An excellent turn out of the Legion and well supported by the residents of Cerne Abbas. A reception was held in the village hall at the end of the ceremonies.

One of my many visits to other Towns on behalf of the National Association during the year was to Middlewich which is about 10 miles from Crewe. There historic links are with the Romans and the Normans . They have had several archaeological digs over the years. We had a guide show us round and gave us a talk on the projects that have taken place. The salt industry has existed since Roman times and in the last century the Trent and Mersey Canal was lined with the salt works .They have managed to celebrate with Canal and Salt heritage and the creation of a heritage trail. If you get on to there web site there is all the information you need about this very pleasant town. You will see from the pictures our group was shown almost all there was to see The local Church with a local quartet entertaining us, the local school as modern as you can get also a chapel, the working canal that runs through the town and of course the Council offices were all the hard work is done.

These are some of the pictures taken on this historic day . The bravery of the men that played in this wet blusterer day in May warrants much admiration. The visiting captain Jason Slade decided to bat on a vicious turning wicket that made the ball unplayable. Which says something about the approach to the game.This was a 20x20 match and to the teams credit they manage to get to 20 by the way of no balls and wides. As the umpire of this match I am certain that extras were the highest scorer. With 50 to win the captain Tom O'Donnell struck the winning run with a dashing cover drive to the boundary after a dashing display worthy of the match being his day. TOWN BUS NOT DELIVERING

As a Councillor of the town I am very concerned about the Town Bus and its direction. I have described it as a less than satisfactory service with my concerns about the diminished quality of the 71 bus. I specifically referred to a permanent bus stop outside Hallett Court on Queens walk. I am also particularly concerned for the aged and often infirmed people of Hallett Court The only sheltered housing in town and the bus does not stop there on a scheduled stop. It has become an unscheduled stop. Because the stop is only a request going away from the town where is the sense in that. This happens when the bus visits the Cobb 11 times a day and Somers road 13 times.

A reminder of those days
Tolverne is a small landing stage where members of the 29th Infantry left England to attack Omaha Beach. Tolverne is situated north of the King Harry Ferry crossing on the river Fal, again north of Falmouth, Cornwall.

The whole of Great Britain was a vast armed camp by 1944. For D-Day the British/Canadian's were held in camps from Bournemouth on the south coast all the way up to the north sea ports. The Americans used the west of Britain from Poole, Dorset all the way around the coast to Bristol, South Wales and Northern Ireland.

To load soldiers, their vehicles and equipment onto landing craft they needed 'Hard's' a place where LST's (Landing Ship Tanks) could drive bow first onto a HARD (beach) and open their doors and lower a loading ramp.

Jo and I have been frequent visitors to St Mawes over the years . One of the interesting sites has always been the Gig club practice rowing nights normally Tuesdays and Thursdays. As some of there members contributed to winning the world championship I thought that I should offer my congratulations from the Lyme Regis Gig Club. Some pictures of there rowing nights are enclosed with more to follow.They have four Gig's. One only for championship racing,two for practice nights and the other for racing. They have a very keen junior section and we know what the ladies can do ! Take note of the name of the red Gig named after the man who built the first Gig in the Roseland

It was nice to be back not only am I the representative for LRTC it being Larger Council but also I was made a Vice President two years ago It was nice to meet up with everyone again after my hip operation. Youth Theatre

An evening at the Lyme Youth Theatre.This is not the first time that I have seen these young people perform and once again I was not disappointed at the performance of the cast. They will be representing Lyme Regis and Dorset at the Big Youth Theatre Festival later this month. Mark my word they will not let us down "just" is a challenging contemporary play for both actors and audience and was first produced at the National Theatre in 2005 .The Festival is four days of camping and theatre for youth theatres from workshops and performances from theatre professionals, and performances from other youth theatres.

Nice to be back folks . What a difference a new hip makes. I can only say to any one who has had or got a painful hip have the operation it gives you a new lease of life. At this time I would like to compliment all the Dorchester Hospital medical staff, Doctors, Nurses etc. I apologise to them because I think at one time I gave them a hard time but I would not have got well without there help. You all have my very grateful thanks for your patience. Not to forget the ladies who cleaned the ward every day and those who brought our food. There are some very special thank yous as well I cannot mention any names but they will know who they are .

Arrived back home Tuesday after the operation. I believe and at the moment successful. Have to take it easy for five to six weeks and am on crutches at the moment. Daptc AGM and Conference

The DAPTC Annual General Meeting and Conference were held in the Council Chamber, County Hall, Dorchester It was an all day affair held for the first time in this format and I believe very successful. Some 70 representatives of Dorset Towns and Parishes attended. The purpose of this meeting was the final planning of launch events and to outline the next steps to take. For example 8th November the evening launch and the 10th November, the bag give away, street entertainment etc.

Occasionally on a Sunday I visited the Bethany Chapel in Coombe Street, Lyme Regis . Every one is made very welcome .The last Sunday in every month is particulary nice they have tea ,sandwiches and cakes at the end of the service. Most people stay on on and have a chat amongst themselves and try to put the world to rights !

Wednesday 15th August. The annual cream tea at Abbeyfield was held indoors this year instead of there lovely garden because of the inclement weather. Never the less it was an enjoyable few hours with the usual speedy waitress service and excellent cream teas. Weight of the cake ,tombola were all there to take part in.

Saturday 11th August I was with the Lyme Regis Radio team in the Carnival procession. We had speakers letting people know who we were and talk to them on route down broad street and on to the Cobb. Massive crowds as usual a great evening. This is me resting before the start .

Wednesday 8th August In the morning I was on the beach with the Carnival and Regatta team

interviewing children and there parents before and during the hunt the small mat game 120 had been hidden in the sand earlier in the morning Nearly 90 children took part. But only fifity seven mats were found . Never mind all the children got a prize it was all good fun .If you look at the photos some of the children were very big ! You will notice the pirate he found some, the young lady sitting next to my friend the sound engineer was the winner with seven mats.The interview is on LRRadio

Tuesday 7th August With the Town Clerk and the Vice Chairman of T & A committee I traveled to Bournemouth on Council business. In the afternoon I went to the Bournemouth eye hospital which turned out to be my final visit and have been discharged . A great relief at long last although not all my sight has returned the hospital have done a great job and I must be very thankful to them for what I have. I shall now be heading for the spec shop !

Euplogia quadripunctaria.

In the past day Josephine and I have had a visitor from Europe a Jersey Tiger but only visits Devon in this country she seems to have strayed a bit, quite beautiful a painted lady if ever there was one. A moth who flies at day as well as night its winter is passed as a small caterpillar.She did not stay long and had somewhere else to go you could say a flying visit. We wished her well and sent her on here way. Double click on the picture .

Monday 6th August This morning I visited the photographic exhibition at the Masonic Hall in Broad Street as usual I was made extremely welcome by the members, had my cup of tea and chatted to a few members as one does. It was up to there usual high standard and well worth visit.

Sunday 5th August 11.00am was an interesting morning. I went along and interviewed the members of the Ambulance service ,the Fire Brigade and the Dorset Police for Lyme Regis Radio. This was held in there combined unit open day at the Woodmead car park . All the interviews will be on LRRadio and I should make a point of listening to them .They gave demonstrations by the responder unit and the Ambulance service .Coffee and Tea and some lovely cakes I wish I could eat them well done everyone on the day you all made LRRadio very welcome . May you carry on the good work in the future.

Today at 11.00am this morning was the start of the first Golf ball derby. 100 hundred golf balls were sold and were raced down the slope from the gardens onto the parade . The winner was a young man from London on holiday. My part in all this was interviewing some of the participants for Lyme Regis Radio on various topics about the Golf ball race there holiday perhaps and how they liked the new style Lyme beach and front. In the evening with my wife Josephine we had a meal at the Bay the Bay restaurant and watched the torch light parade go bye . An excellent turn out with the Junior band and Majorettes leading the way. We met many friends old and new who stopped to chat. Progress was made photos and the layout were discussed with the feedback from the meeting on the 18th . Annual Somers Day Commemoration Parade
I joined the Somers Day Parade meeting at Langmoor Gardens 11.00.I then walked down Broad Street with the Mayor leading with the some of the guests from St Georges Bermuda, fellow councillors and members of the Twinning Association. There were some who travelled in front of the parade by car for whatever reason. A disappointing day with light rain and very windy. With all this the group walked to the Cobb and made the usual declarations in the Twinning ceremony. led by the Junior band. Lunch was taken in the Woodmead Hall with around 80 guests . The Mayor of St Georges, the Lord Mayor Plymouth and his lady were in attendance as was the Mayor of Lyme Regis . Lyme Regis Town Crier and the Crier of St Georges with other quest criers were there. The Chairman of WDDC Council was also a quest. A full day ending with the Red Arrows Aerobatic Display Team at 6.30.

July 25th In the evening I went to a Choral Concert at St Michael's Parish Church in aid of the RNLI. With a choir and musicians of over 50 it was s superb evening . Vivaldi,Mozart Carter Handel and many others were there to listen to I am looking forward to the next one in August

July 27th The RNLI Duck race .I had the pleasure of interviewing for Lyme Regis Radio at this event and to mingle and talk to the visitors and the very excited children. Over a thousand ducks went into the water but unfortunately there could only be one winner. The sun came out for this very exciting spectacle in the RNLI calendar.

July 30th attended WDDC Lyme Regis Environmental improvements. Meeting of the Business Continuity group at WDDC, Lyme Regis Offices on Monday 30th July at 14.30 report will be on the reports page This was to be the last meeting for Phase 2 unless a meeting is found to be necessary. I offered my thanks on behalf of everyone present and the Town for all the work that had been put in by the members of the committe in the past and the present.

Sunday 17th June This was a day of remembrance . I stayed indoors to watch the Falklands remembrance parade, service and fly past that was held in London today A truly magnificent day for all those who either watched or took part. It does not seem that long ago, 25 years in fact that Josephine and I went to Axminster to see troops[ passing through on there way. I remember a day like that many years ago when I was there it was called V day. On that day I was perched on the top of the gates opposite the palace with my Auntie Dolly. If anyone in New Zealand reads this and had Granny Dolly please call me

On Friday View from Lyme presented me with a photo album of Josephine and myself during our Mayoral year.
A wonderfull record for us to keep and treasure we shall be making a copy available to the Museum it will be at least a part record record of how the town was in 2007.

June 1st Friday Josephine returned back home from her last appointment. We normally eat out on this night and we chose the Indian Restaurant in town this time. As usual a wonderful meal and service. After that we went to the Royal Lion to finish off the evening met some friends and spent the rest of the evening with them.

June 2nd Saturday Went to the Marine Theatre in the morning . The meeting was called VOLUNTEERS FOR LYME. Organised by the Marine Theatre,Town Mill and the Museum who have an immediate and on-going need for extra volunteers to help in three vital areas. It is something that I strongly support with all the many people who attended. John Bartholomew.
Marine Theatre,Godfrey Thomas Town Mill ,Ken Gollop Museum and Oliver Letwin our local MP also supported the project and all spoke very strongly in its favour.

The coffee and bits were also excellent!

Please help if you can we are so fortunate to have such organisations in the town

Nice to meet old friends once again and hear one or two sing.

In the afternoon I went to watch the annual football match with the French side Cruelly that they play every year. A good match unfortunately the visitors won. In the evening they are all dining at the Bye the Bay restaurant I would not like to bet on who is going to win that one.! I was given the privilege of starting the game by kicking off from the centre circle. I was pleased I actually hit the ball and it moved . The old left foot still knows what to do! You see what football lost all those years ago. Comments to the Sun please. Report of the match and evening will no doubt be in the Local Press.

June 5th Tuesday I went to London all day to attend a meeting of the National Association of Local Councils. This was for a meeting of the National Executive of which I am a member being Chairman of the Policy committee . I am also the representative of NALC on the Government committee looking into the state of the country's churchyards and future burial laws. Details are available on the web and also I have put in small report to Council for guidance in the case of people who want to know more.

June 3rd Sunday Having just had our small garden revamped it was to the nursery we must go .At least it was a start and is already starting to look like a magazine cover. Progress will be reported! Designed by Jonathan Whetlor Planted by Josephine Whetlor

June 10th Sunday I attended St Michaels Church Lyme Regis at the annual service for the Council and the towns people. You see me here on the left talking to our Legion President Cecil Quick.Natalie Spiller sang the solo verse during communion with great aplomb and the Town Band gave there usual solid performance to accompany the hymns. I was also impressed with the choir nice to hear them . Our vicar must take a lot of credit for the organisation on this morning .Some chap played the organ it was my impression that with a bit more practice he might do well . What do I know ! By the way trust the renovations go well John I will see you on Saturday 30th June Josephine will be there if she is home. Sorry about the picture some one keeping me in the dark again ? A year to the day in the life of a former Mayor of Lyme Regis

As I walked to catch the 6.35 bus to Dorchester this morning I reflected in what was going to happen to me doing the course of this day. I new why I was going to Bournemouth to have treatment for my eye and hopefully coming home but what else was in the mix. This is my short story of the event full day.
I got on bus and was told that it only goes to Bridport I will have to change there. No problem arrived Dorchester South to be told that there was a train delay a lorry had hit a bridge at Upwey and had to be inspected before trains could move. 30 mins later the train arrived and I arrived at Bournemouth. Got on the bus to the hospital and was amazingly on time for my appointment. About 10.30 I met the consultant and during the laser treatment the consultant said that he was not happy with the progress and suggested that he took me into the operating theatre after lunch for a more detailed treatment. This I agreed so at 14.00 approx I found myself in the theatre and after the usual ritual of talking to the male nurse the anaesthetist, someone who was having a preview and the consultant we got underway . The eye was anesthetized , my other eye covered up and the proceedings started. The laser was clicking away ,talking was going on and I had no pain a strange feeling. About 20min later I was wheeled back into the day patients room and given a very welcome cup of tea and a sandwich of my choosing.I had decided to make my way home although if you don't feel to good the Hospital would have given me a bed for the night.I have nothing but praise for the Eye Unit in Bournemouth Hospital, I have been treated very well and will be revisiting them in four week time for I hope my final operation on my eye. You need to know from the entrance to the Hospital to the eye unit is approx one third of mile.They have a buggy run by volunteers to take patients and visitors if they cannot walk to parts of the hospital an amazing service. So an hour later with one eye covered and looking like someone from the blitz I started on my way home getting the bus to Bournemouth station and the train to Dorchester South that was uneventful.In fact it looked better with one eye!The bus was 40mins late arriving at the station but at least it arrived. Just as we left Dorchester a high pitch wining started in the bus ,just what I needed and continued to Bridport.This meant a change of bus again and we were on the way to Lyme.I had a taxi waiting for me by the bus stop at Anning road and the the time was 7.00pm exactly. My thoughts went back to a year ago to the day when at that time the proceedings started to make me the Mayor of Lyme Regis and give Josephine and I a wonderful 2007. What a day !

May3rd Election day. A good turn out something like 47% voted from the electoral register. My son Jonathan emigrated to Australia to get married and start a new life there . I took him to Gatwick and wished him and Elizabeth well for the years ahead. For me it was an emotional parting .

May4th/5th/6th As Mayor with Mary Anning present I opened the Fossil Festival in Lyme Regis.It was open for three days a huge success and hopefully will be in the years to come . On the 6th was also the town fete, as Mayor I opened that with the Junior town band, the majorettes and many stalls. A good day was had by all .

May5th Presented a pennant to the Commodore of the Lyme Regis sailing club from the sailing club of Bermuda.
May7th As Mayor I started the Duck Race as always it was very well supported I did not know it then but it was to be my last duty as Mayor of Lyme Regis .
May9th attended Bournemouth eye hospital and given the news that I had to have two more eye operations and given two dates for them. One on the 24th May and the other on the 21st June. I am sure most of you will understand the significances of these dates? I was not offered one more year as Mayor but would not have taken it if it had been offered. But it would have been nice to have had the chance of refusal if I had wanted to . ! In talking to the consultant it was obvious that something had to be done sooner rather than later.
May14th attended the AGM of the Twinning Association .
May16th attended Lyme Regis Area Partnership meeting (Lyme Forward)
May 17th/18th I went to Birmingham for a two day meeting with representatives from the National Association of Local Councils (NALC)
With the changes in Local Government it is essential that organisations change with it and have an understanding of the situation this obviously includes the Councils and local organisations. The new planning regulations are a perfect example. Unfortunately due to this meeting I was unable to attend two Council meetings.

May21st Royal British Legion Quiz night. A night organised by David Manners and committee members. I presented the prizes at the end of the quiz on this very enjoyable evening. I am sure there will be another later in the year following the success of this one. Once again my sincere thank you to all for your support of the Royal British Legion Enjoy the Pics

May 24th I had a small eye operation at the Bournemouth eye hospital. You can read about that in my article about that day .

Special thank you to our Town Crier Phil Street for his support I am sure that he enjoyed the year as much as I did. I felt that josephine, I and Phil were a team and we were priviledged to be part of it. All the Town Hall staff were magnificent especially Pat Stamp the Mayors Secretary who never yawned once when I am sure she wanted to . The Town Clerk for his special guidance when needed , Natalie for her enthusiasm and Chris the financial side. I will be making another statement in due course on the past year and the future

April 18th Wednesday The Mayoress and I arrived in Bermuda for a few days break before the Twinning party arrived which they do on Sunday 22nd May Josephine and I with the Mayor of Bermuda met the party at the airport to make sure all was ok and they got to their host for the week.
But the before I go on to tell you about the trip I must tell you the story of Donna the lady who was and is sailing round the world. To give you more information here is her web site and blog please read it she is one remarkable lady. Donna had encountered 40 ft waves and had lost her auto steering some 100 miles from Bermuda and was having to steer her boat herself. She was in trouble and assistance was sent as she neared Bermuda. She was given help by mine host, slept all day and told her story to us. Below is the boat and the Lady
April 19th Thursday Spent the day relaxing in St Georges a trip to Dockyard and visiting the Bank of Bermuda who looked after the Mayor and Mayoress chains while we there.
April 20th Friday am Met Donna on the boat and had pictures taken. Went to the Heritage Centre pm Went to Nature reserve (Spittles) and John Smith Bay.
April 21st Saturday am Went to our favourite beach Tobacco Bay and in the evening went to the sailing club for a fish & chip dinner with our host and family about 100 people were there a great social evening. Donna played the guitar and Irish flute. She was getting well after her ordeal.
April 22nd Sunday am Attended the Salvation Army church in St Georges. Had lunch at the Somers restaurant and met the twinning party at the airport in the evening
April 23rd Monday am Went to Mulligans for breakfast as usual it was very filling. In evening went to the Rotary dinner enjoyable evening with a speaker on the caves of Bermuda. Donna has flown home to Canada for a week and reception party.

April 24th Tuesday Twinning dinner in the evening at Somers Restaurant in the open air. Pipers made an entrance kilts and all and Jackie sang. Wonderful evening Cutting of the 10th anniversary cake by Mayor of Bermuda and Mayor of Lyme Regis and the Chairman of the TwinningAssociation

April 25th WednesdayPeppercorn day. Fine parade theTown Crier and I went up to the dais with the dignitaries and met the Governor of Bermuda. Afterwards everyone went to the garden party
April 26th Thursday Darts Match by web cam from the Nags Head Lyme Regis to the sailing boat club in St Georges Bermuda Lyme Regis won 3 nil and still have the cup! I presented them a Lyme Regis Pennant and they gave me a pennant to bring to the sailing club in Lyme Regis. This is always a night not to miss and we are made very welcome as always. The suppers they have for us are amazing you look at it and always want to be hungry! Receiving the winning cup for the lads in Lyme Regis for winning again ! sorry Bermuda . I know you will reading this blog Here I am receiving the Bermuda sailing club pennant to take back to Lyme Regis from the the Commodore Andre Shearer.

April 27th Friday Phil Street and Dawn Josephine and myself visited the Botanical garden at the invitation of the Park superintendent. We went there to get advice for the planting of a Bermudian garden in our gardens. After showing us around he then drove us to the Governors residence and the Premiers residence sight seeing. In the evening took Phil and Dawn to dinner at a place called swizzles a place not to be missed. Remember the ice cream Dawn ?
April28th Saturday went to Hamilton with Bernard and Josephine and the lovable Dotte I think the two clowns either side make a formidable trio ?

Earlier on in my blog i said that I had taken a pennant from the Lyme Regis sailing club to be presented to the Commodore of the Bermuda club. As Mayor for the past year it also gave me the honour of being The President of the Twinning Association for the past year . In that capacity I accepted a pennant from the Commodore of the Bermuda sailing club and made the reciprocal presentation to Lyme Regis . I do hope that this will begin a bonding between the to clubs in the years to come .

Lyme Regis Sailing Club

April 15th
Today Sunday the Mayoress and I were invited to the Sailing Club for the Commodores Reception. We were met by the Honorary Secretary Sally Holman and the Commodore Keith Thompson. We were made very welcome, a lovely buffet and a excellent social occasion followed. Unfortunately because of a lack of wind the boats never took to the water until well after lunch. But I think the Bar gained because of that. Josephine and I thank the Club for the invitation and the generosity in your welcome.The Honorary Secretary and Keith Thompson on behalf of the Sailing club presented us with a mast head cruising pennant from a club bargee, seen in the photo, to take with us to Bermuda I will present the pennant to the Bermuda Dingy and Sailing club on their behalf and the Twinning Association at the annual darts match between Lyme Regis and Bermuda. Normally this match is conducted on a telephone link up but for the first time this year there will be a Web Cam between the Nags Head Lyme Regis and the Bermuda Sailing club. This is to show that the darts really do hit the board!

April 11th Spring Civic Reception
The Mayoress and I attended the above reception at Dorchester WDDC offices. Unfortunately the Chairman Mary Penfold had a bereavement in her family and could not be there. We send our condolences for her sad loss at this time Never the less it was a pleasant evening meeting most of the Mayors and there escorts we had met during the course of our visits around the county. With elections coming up we might not meet them again.

April 12th Quarterly meeting held at the Woodmead Hall

President of the Lyme Regis branch of the Royal British Legion, Cecil Quick (pictured right) presents branch treasurer Martin Jones with the Jack Loveridge Trophy First awarded in 1978, it is presented to the member who the committee felt contributed most invaluably to the branch over the last twelve months.Mr. Quick said: “ in the short time that Martin has been our treasurer he has excelled. His attention to detail has been truly helpful to the Royal British Legion. He is a great asset to the branch.”

This year was an outstanding success with fine weather bringing out the crowds to watch the the Easter Bonnet parade. Led by the Town Junior Band. Mayor and Mayoress and the Town Crier the very colourful procession marched down Broad Street distributing small chocolate eggs to the watching children on the way to Theatre square. There were crowds of people watching on both sides of the street as you will see from the photos. Prizes were given in many categories from age six to venerable years ! The Majorettes who were also in the parade put on their show during the Bonnet judging and before the prize giving. As usual they were a credit to their team. Many thanks to all those, too numerous to mention, who generously contributed to this event. The Prize Stall

Another lovely sunny morning in Lyme Regis. I went to the Marine Theatre to visit a book fair very interesting looking at books that I had forgotten had ever existed Then walked on the front and met up with Rotary having a fund raising morning in the shelters. Then met up with the Mayoress and had coffee in a well known restaurant along the front.

I went to the PTA Duck Race which starts at Woodmead Road Waterfall and ends at Mill Green with over 600 ducks in the water yellow ones of course ! The Town Crier was in his usual good voice and heralded my starting of the race. We were also at the finish he shouted and I presented the cash prizes.You will see from the pictures that the race was very well supported as always. The crowds at the start and the Ducks leaving !

The Visit to Lyme Regis of the Princess Royal

Today was another highlight of our Mayoral year the visit of Princess Anne.
The Mayoress and I had the privilege to be in the reception party to meet the Princess Royal on her arrival in Lyme Regis at the Alexander Hotel. The Princess was here to open the new Sea Front and Langmoor Gardens, which had been part of the coastal protection scheme. Many local dignitaries were presented to the Princess Royal in the garden of the Hotel who had been involved in the scheme in some way since the early 90’s. Following this the Princess walked through the gardens down to the beach to unveil a plaque in memory of the opening. I would like to think the photos above would give an understanding how pleasant the occasion was for all concerned.

As Mayor I was invited as a guest to this very special evening at the school for the Senior Awards Ceremony. First I must thank those two ladies who escorted me during the evening it was much appreciated.This year was quite special for me as I had the Head Boy and Girl as my Mayors escorts this year. they did a wonderfull job and am sure they will always have a good memory of those days. I wish them well on there way to University. Also there was another young lady I was delighted to see collect her special award. I know her family are very proud of her so are Josephine and I . Also to all those students I saw that evening being rewarded for there efforts, including the Jazz Band the Chamber Choir and the Saxophone Quartet and of course the staff on behalf of the Town of Lyme Regis congratulations.

As usual a very good meeting with a Dorset Fire Officer giving a talk on Fire safety advice and guidance. Also two planning officers from WDDC asking questions of the membership on there views for planning for the future ie: roads, building, transport etc. About 30 plus members were there. If anyone wants advice or have not got a smoke alarm phone your local fire bridgade, they will fit one free and advise you. Dont forget FIRE KILLS you can prevent it Bye Bye .

A Charity evening by Lyme Regis Rotary Club

This evening was presented by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis Sponsored by Lentells,Chartered Accountants. In aid of Shelterbox & the RNLI Lyme Regis.
I was invited as Mayor of Lyme Regis to the evening and with my escort Cllr Barbara Austin enjoyed this film that had been made in Lyme Regis 25 years ago. The town was captivated by the filming, and still evokes great memories amongst all of us who were living in the town at that time The Cinema was full for the evening and everyone was invited to the Pilot Boat afterwards for drinks and a buffet supper. I am sure the money raised will be in the local papers

Wednesday 21st March
I attended meeting of the Traders. This was the second meeting that I have attended with traders and I am impressed with the enthusiasm of the new committee and members. It was important for the town to have at last a representative body of the trading fraternity in the town.

Thursday 22nd March Coastal Forum
I am the Chairman of this neeting.This meeting was attended by forty plus public to hear the latest news and ongoing work on the gardens and the seafront.West Dorset District Council were represented by Mr G Allen.Mr N Browning,Mr M Rawles. Reports were given on Phase 2/4 Cobb Gate Jetty, Marine Parade Shelters . There was a question and answer session afterwards. A good meeting which kept everyone present up to date.

Friday 23rd Annual Town Meeting
As Mayor I am Chairman of this meeting This is a special meeting , a public meeting
called once a year for the benifit of those who have the right to vote in Lyme , and for them to raise any matter of public interest regarding the town with their representatives from the three Councils,WDDC ,DCC and LRTC who have responsibilities for Lyme Regis . The police are there to answer any matters that arose from the meeting that concerned the public. Members of the public who have business in Lyme or other connections have their say in open session at the Chairman's discretion . The Agenda was a full one as you can see from the following. These were presentations from the Lyme Regis Community plan, Marine Parade Shelters Regeneration, Lyme Regis Fossil Festival "Rising Seas" 2007,the Lyme Regis Arts Festival 2007 and the Lyme Regis Sure Start Children's Centre. Questions were taken and answered if possible or taken back to Council for later perusal. Coffee,Tea and biscuits were generously supplies by the Woodmead Hall at the end of the evening. I wish to thank the Woodmead Hall for all the work they put in on the night allowing us to give an excellent evening to the electors.

CIVIC NIGHT at the WOODMEAD HALL

The Mayor and Mayoress welcomed over one hundred guests to their Civic night . At the start of the evening, on arrival, guests were announced by the Town Crier, Phil Street and welcomed by the Mayor,Mayoress, Town Clerk, Head boy and Head girl of Woodroffe School, with our two Mace Bearers also in attendance. The welcoming party then left the hall to disrobe and return to the hall and to the traditional clapping as they made there way to the table.The evening opened with the Lyme Regis Majorettes and the Lyme Regis Junior Town Band performing for the guests. These two organisations benefited from the fund raising activities included in the programme.After these presentations the Mayor's Chaplain said grace and the meal was served. An excellent meal as always by the caterers.At this point I must comment on the lay out of the tables and the wonderful flower arrangement of orchids that were donated by Judith Pothergary . At the end of the evening they were all sold and the monies collected added to the fundraising on the night. A magnificent gesture by Judith and much appreciated.Our fund raising took the form of "games" with a fee to join in and prize money for the winner. Thursday 15th. The Bridport Town walk- about led by the Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Ackerman.

The Civic Party was met by the Mayor at Mountfield to view the Millennium Tapestry and have coffee with him.
We then travelled by coach to the Old Brewery for a conducted tour of the brewery. Our guide was very informative and took us round the entire brewery explaining the process from start to finish and ending with a glass of ale the brewery shop.
Then a return to the Town Hall for a good lunch and rest after the morning walk ! In the town hall we viewed the Fra Newbery Collection of paintings.
We then travelled by coach to Gore Cross Business Park, Bradpole to visit Huck

The final visit was to The Salt House at West Bay and a short outdoor talk before we had tea and made our way home. Congratulations to Cllr Ackerman for putting together an interesting day . I certainly know more about Breweries and net factories than I did before . The pictures were taken at both.

A lunch to remember

Tuesday 13th. About every eight weeks at Hallett Court, dinner is served for the senior citizens of the town. Today there were over forty of us sitting down to soup, cottage pie or chicken with vegetables and peaches and ice cream. I had been invited to this get together and very pleased to join in an excellent lunch. In the picture are some of the helpers who give their time voluntarily to cook and serve the meal and relax with their guests after having their own lunch. These moments are very valuable for those in our community who live on their own. It is vital that we make every effort to encourage the social activities offered at Hallet Court. It will be tragic if Hallet Court becomes the victim of economic cuts.

CIVIC NIGHT has arrived

The Mayor and Mayoress will be welcoming guests at the Woodmead Halls this coming Saturday to their Civic Night. They will be met by the Civic party on arrival as is the custom. From then on they will be wined, dined and entertained. Josephine and I are really looking forward to meeting everyone on this very sociable occasion.

A busy week

Tuesday 6 th March I attended a NALC Executive meeting in London in the morning /afternoon and came back in the evening to a meeting of the Bermuda Twinning committee at the Guildhall.

Wednesday 7th as you can see on the Blog I went to the Brewery with the Mayor of Bridport and his daughter who kindly acted as our escort for the evening.

Thursday 8th Chaired a Lyme Regis Partnership meeting at the Woodmead Hall. This is going very well and a steering committee was set up of ten members to report back to the next meeting of the partnership

In the evening I called a full Council meeting at the Guildhall.This was to pick four names out of my Mayors hat to meet the Princess Royal with the Mayoress and I next month Four names were picked and one reserve in case of one Cllr not to be able to make it.

Friday 9th I went to a coffee morning in the Pilot Boat in aid of the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust .The Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust exists to find a cure for the childhood and adult brain tumours through funding research. They also offer support,hope and information to patients and their carers. The trust was founded in memory of their daughter age 16. This event was hosted by the Action Forum of Lyme Regis and Uplyme. All were made very welcome by the members some of whom are pictured below the home made tea, coffee wonderful cakes and my pocket money !

I met after the refreshments with Oliver Letwin MP, Town Clerk Marcus Dixon and Wendy Davies in the Guildhall the subject to be revealed later.

Saturday 10th The Mayoress and I were invited as guests to the annual Rotary Club of Lyme Regis dinner at the Royal Lion Hotel by the President.Unfortunately the Mayoress was unable to attend due to a previous commitment. It was really nice evening with the rotarians and guests. I was seated between two attractive daughters of the President who just happened to be police officers. I have never felt so secure with the Mayors chains as at this time. What made me so confident was that one of them absolutely adored Pooh Bear but I did promise I would not go into to many details about that. Like the Pooh Bear ...... Hmm. and especially as earlier in the week I had spent some time in the Bear Shop with all the relations. I thank you all for making my evening so enjoyable Bye Bye.
