CIVIC NIGHT at the WOODMEAD HALL

The Mayor and Mayoress welcomed over one hundred guests to their Civic night . At the start of the evening, on arrival, guests were announced by the Town Crier, Phil Street and welcomed by the Mayor,Mayoress, Town Clerk, Head boy and Head girl of Woodroffe School, with our two Mace Bearers also in attendance. The welcoming party then left the hall to disrobe and return to the hall and to the traditional clapping as they made there way to the table. The evening opened with the Lyme Regis Majorettes and the Lyme Regis Junior Town Band performing for the guests. These two organisations benefited from the fund raising activities included in the programme. After these presentations the Mayor's Chaplain said grace and the meal was served. An excellent meal as always by the caterers. At this point I must comment on the lay out of the tables and the wonderful flower arrangement of orchids that were donated by Judith Pothergary . At the end of the evening they were all sold and the monies collected added to the fundraising on the night. A magnificent gesture by Judith and much appreciated. Our fund raising took the form of "games" with a fee to join in and prize money for the winner. The pictures above feature the Town Crier and the Mayoress, Mayor of Axminster,Mayor of Bridport, Chairman of WDDC and many other friends. At the end of the evening I interviewed
Mary Penfold Chairman of WDDC and Geoff Ackerman Mayor of Bridport for radiolymeregis.com in some interesting conversation .

The Bridport Mayors walk about

Thursday 15th. The Bridport Town walk- about led by the Mayor, Councillor Geoffrey Ackerman.

The Civic Party was met by the Mayor at Mountfield to view the Millennium Tapestry and have coffee with him.
We then travelled by coach to the Old Brewery for a conducted tour of the brewery. Our guide was very informative and took us round the entire brewery explaining the process from start to finish and ending with a glass of ale the brewery shop.
Then a return to the Town Hall for a good lunch and rest after the morning walk ! In the town hall we viewed the Fra Newbery Collection of paintings.
We then travelled by coach to Gore Cross Business Park, Bradpole to visit Huck
Nets UK Ltd. You see the result of this work everyday in football nets, tennis nets, bird nets- you name it they make it.
The final visit was to The Salt House at West Bay and a short outdoor talk before we had tea and made our way home. Congratulations to Cllr Ackerman for putting together an interesting day . I certainly know more about Breweries and net factories than I did before . The pictures were taken at both.

A lunch to remember

Tuesday 13th. About every eight weeks at Hallett Court, dinner is served for the senior citizens of the town. Today there were over forty of us sitting down to soup, cottage pie or chicken with vegetables and peaches and ice cream. I had been invited to this get together and very pleased to join in an excellent lunch. In the picture are some of the helpers who give their time voluntarily to cook and serve the meal and relax with their guests after having their own lunch. These moments are very valuable for those in our community who live on their own. It is vital that we make every effort to encourage the social activities offered at Hallet Court. It will be tragic if Hallet Court becomes the victim of economic cuts.

A busy week

Pooh Bear is the one in the middle ! Perhaps not as cuddly as the original but he will do ! x

Tuesday 6 th March I attended a NALC Executive meeting in London in the morning /afternoon and came back in the evening to a meeting of the Bermuda Twinning committee at the Guildhall.

Wednesday 7th as you can see on the Blog I went to the Brewery with the Mayor of Bridport and his daughter who kindly acted as our escort for the evening.

Thursday 8th Chaired a Lyme Regis Partnership meeting at the Woodmead Hall. This is going very well and a steering committee was set up of ten members to report back to the next meeting of the partnership

In the evening I called a full Council meeting at the Guildhall. This was to pick four names out of my Mayors hat to meet the Princess Royal with the Mayoress and I next month Four names were picked and one reserve in case of one Cllr not to be able to make it.

Friday 9th I went to a coffee morning in the Pilot Boat in aid of the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust .The Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust exists to find a cure for the childhood and adult brain tumours through funding research. Saturday 10th The Mayoress and I were invited as guests to the annual Rotary Club of Lyme Regis dinner at the Royal Lion Hotel by the President.Unfortunately the Mayoress was unable to attend due to a previous commitment. It was really nice evening with the rotarians and guests. I was seated between two attractive daughters of the President who just happened to be police officers. I have never felt so secure with the Mayors chains as at this time. What made me so confident was that one of them absolutely adored Pooh Bear but I did promise I would not go into to many details about that. Like the Pooh Bear ...... Hmm. and especially as earlier in the week I had spent some time in the Bear Shop with all the relations. I thank you all for making my evening so enjoyable Bye Bye.

A Visit to Badgers Brewery

Last evening on Friday 7th March I had the pleasure to be invited with other guests to be shown around Hall & Woodhouse Brewery at Blandford St Mary who brew Badger Beer. All the guests were made extremely welcome and given a guided tour of the brewery by two of the most experience and oldest serving members of staff. The evening ended with an excellent buffet and drink of your choice and a farewell and thank you from David Woodhouse to set us on our way.
The steam engine you see in the picture was the sole power unit until modernisation some 100 years ago
Founded 1777 by a Dorset farmer and still a family business is renowned for its Badger cask and bottled ales.

Mayor & Mayoress are at the Teddy Bear Shop

On Sunday 4th March Josephine and I walked across the road from the Guildhall to “Alice’s Bear Shop' in the most unforgiving weather you can imagine. This was the reopening of the shop, after extensive refurbishment, and many people braved the weather to support Rikey, friends and family on this occasion. We were met by the hostess with a glass of wine and a wonderful display of Teddy Bears. The one in the photo to the left of the Mayoress was very over weight! We opened the shop by cutting the ribbon and after an enjoyable hour left with pooh and tigger as a gift and the purchase of an Alice bear.

Lyme Regis Hydo-Electric Scheme

On the 1st March I attended the opening of the scheme that has enabled he Town Mill to harness the renewable energy of the River Lim to produce 'green' electricity for the mill and for the national grid ,whilst still retaining the mill's traditional function of producing stone-ground flour with water power. For more information on the Mill http://www.townmill.org.uk/

I am getting my hand in by interviewing the vice-chairman of WDDC at this function with Nomad of Lyme Regis Radio.

This is the day a young lady will remember pressing the button to start the Hydro Electric Scheme. Also the young people who lifted the gates and let the water through.

Raglan Housing Association media release
28 February 2007
NEW AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN LYME REGIS
A new property development in Lyme Regis will provide much-needed affordable housing to local residents. The new scheme in Pooles Court was officially opened on Wednesday 28 February and is the first affordable housing to be built in the town for over ten years, comprising ten two-bedroom flats owned and managed by Raglan Housing Association.
Located just a short distance from the seafront and adjacent to playing fields, the scheme was named ‘Park View’ by local resident Mrs Reed, who entered a naming competition run in conjunction with a local newspaper.
Mrs Reed was invited to open the scheme alongside the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Ken Whetlor. Commenting on the scheme, Cllr Whetlor said: “This is wonderful for the Lyme Regis community – housing schemes like this are few and far between. It’s in a great situation looking out over the playing fields. I hope it will be a successful venture in the future.”
Councilllor Robert Gould, Leader of West Dorset District Council, said: “We welcome this new development. There is a very acute need for affordable housing in Lyme Regis, and a scheme like this makes excellent use of redundant land to provide much-needed accommodation for local residents.”
Developed in partnership between Raglan, West Dorset District Council, Brookvale Homes, Lyme Regis Town Council and Lyme Regis Development Trust, the new scheme was made possible thanks to funding from the Housing Corporation and the local authority.
Notes to Editor:

The Association was named as a Housing Corporation Investment Partner earlier this year, and has secured over £24 million in Government funding for its ongoing development programme. Hi everyone .What with computer damage and eye damage I have now manage to start up again I was invited by the Mayor of Kingston on Thames to be her quest at a luncheon held last November.Unfortunately Mary Reid the Mayor was taken ill on the day and as I was there I offered to help by saying a few words ! The text below is part of a letter I received recently from the President of the day .The Mayoress Josephine Whetlor was then invited to a similar luncheon for the ladies . They were both very enjoyable visits
"First of all we all felt what a super day we had in November and how well "Chris Harris's guest" acted as first substitute for our own Mary Reid..
Having Mary Reid back on Pole position at our December lunch she paid due deference to your kindness in holding the November situation. It was delightful that she was able to do this in the hearing of Mrs Whetlor.
We do hope that Christmas and the New Year went well with you both and that the damaging gales did nothing too bad in the way of structural damage to the Whetlor home or, indeed, to Lyme Regis itself. We lost a couple of ridge tiles and a section of wood fencing - and that is at an inland location

During the Christmas holiday Josephine and I went to the National Theatre to see the Coram Boy.Dorothy George wrote in 1931 ) The early part of the eighteenth century has something of the glamour of Arcadia, We think of it as the last age of old England,of solid, stable, rural England
In Georgian society, without protection, the poor and the weak and the sick went under, the rich and the strong prospered wrote JH Plumb 1950 .
Thomas Coram was born in about 1668 in Lyme Regis, was sent to sea when he was 11,and at16,apprenticed to a shipbuilder. In the 1720s,Coram,"a man of that obstinate perservering temper,as never to desist from his first enterprise, whatever obstacles lie in his way ",began fighting a long campaign for London's foundlings .His home was in Rotherhithe , and as walked into the city,he would see the corpses of abandoned babies by the road.
I have written enough go and see the play, as Mayor I just had to or read the book about a man who was born in this town and became Sir Thomas Coram

It was easily the biggest crowd ever for the lighting up of the town, it was very full. I am sure that as always quite a few of the Rotary went away very surprised at what the Legion does for its members .If you want to know more please go to my web site and scroll down to the British Legion Page.
Wednesday 11th October
Chaired a Tourist & Advertising meeting in the morning.
Went to a meeting at the Woodmead Halls in the afternoon it was a public consultation about the Dorset County Hospital’s plans to become a Foundation Trust and how we can help shape the future of our local health services. A disappointing turnout considering the importance of the consultation. That evening it was the AGM for the Under12’s at the LRDT..A very good attendance they are now on their way to being another successful organisation in the town of Lyme Regis. I wish them well and they have my total support for the cause.

I have been Mayor now for five months and with the Mayoress have travelled the length and breadth of Dorset representing this wonderful town of Lyme Regis. The Mayoress and I welcomed as quests to Lyme last month many dignitaries of Dorset to show them the Guildhall , Museum the Town Mill and our splendid new gardens and seafront. Would you believe one of the Mayors had never been to Lyme. That in it itself made it worthwhile . I know that Mayor will be back Thats it for now cheers Ken
